Hiking on Rigi | the “Queen of Mountains”

The Rigi is a very special mountain and not called “Queen of mountains” for nothing. The 360 ° panoramic view is unique and offers a breathtaking view of the Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, Lake Lauerz and the impressive Alps in the background.

The Rigi is a very kids-friendly hiking destination and can be reached easily from Lucerne by train or car. This mountain offers over 160 km of hiking trails, at all levels of difficulty from beginners to experts.

We opted for the panorama trail which leads along the route of the former Scheidegg Railway, easily recognizable for the old railway bridges, short tunnels and decommissioned wagon, which you pass in the midst of natural surroundings.

Our starting point is at Rigi Kaltbad, which is accessible from Weggis by cable car. On the way, there are many pleasant spots and BBQ sites. Swiss people usually eat “Cervelat”, Switzerland’s favourite sausage, when they go hiking. The sausage, a mix of beef and pork, is grilled over an open fire with a pointy wooden stick. Kids love it!

If you forgot your picnic, we recommend the restaurant Unterstetten. The view from the restaurant’s terrace is breathtaking. You can overview the Lake Lucerne and the Alps while eating a traditional Swiss lunch.

The hike continues in direction of “Hinder Dosse” and Rigi Scheidegg. Once you reach Rigi Scheidegg take the cable railway down to Chräbel and from there the cog railway to Arth-Goldau.
